Liability vs Full Coverage Car Insurance

Plain-English educational information to help you understand insurance before you compare.

Liability insurance generally helps pay for injuries or property damage you cause to others, subject to policy terms and limits. The phrase “full coverage” is not a standardized policy name. People commonly use it to describe a package that includes liability plus collision and comprehensive coverage.

Collision coverage generally addresses covered damage to your own vehicle after a collision, while comprehensive coverage generally addresses certain non-collision losses such as theft, vandalism or weather-related damage. Deductibles and exclusions apply.

The right combination depends on factors such as state requirements, vehicle value, financing or lease obligations, your savings and your tolerance for risk. Review actual policy documents and ask a licensed professional if you need advice for your situation.
